Starmer Comments on National Flag Amid Central London Protests and Police Injuries

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer stated that the Union flag represents Britain’s “diverse country” and should not be co-opted by groups to promote division and fear. His comments followed significant demonstrations held in central London.

The protests included a ‘Unite the Kingdom’ march, organized by activist Tommy Robinson, which the Metropolitan Police estimated involved over 150,000 people. Simultaneously, a counter-protest led by Stand Up To Racism attracted approximately 5,000 participants. During these events, the Metropolitan Police reported 26 officers sustained injuries, with four seriously, as they endeavored to separate rival groups. Incidents cited included protesters attacking officers and mounted police using batons to deter crowds attempting to encircle counter-protesters. Authorities anticipate additional arrests as investigations into the events proceed.
