The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has announced its 2024 People’s Choice Award recipients, with Hamnet, directed by Chloé Zhao, receiving the main honor. This award has historically been associated with subsequent recognition at the Academy Awards, as all recipients from 2011 to 2023 secured either a Best Picture nomination or a win. In contrast, last year’s winner, The Life of Chuck, experienced limited box office performance and received a critical review upon its release. Hamnet, which premiered to positive reviews at the Telluride Film Festival, marks Zhao’s second People’s Choice Award at TIFF, following her win for Nomadland in 2020.

TIFF also introduced an International People’s Choice Award, which was presented to Park Chan-wook’s No Other Choice. The People’s Choice Award for Documentary was awarded to The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue, a film that garnered varied critical responses. Concurrently, Jim Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother, featuring Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver, and Charlotte Rampling, was awarded the top prize at the Venice Film Festival.
