Downing Street has stated that RAF Fairford is secure following the withdrawal of US bombers from the base. The Pentagon confirmed that the aircraft have been returned to their home stations in the United States.
This action comes after the recent arrest of six individuals in connection with a suspected terror plot targeting the base. US officials indicated that the redeployment was ordered after new details about threats to the base emerged.
A spokesperson for the Prime Minister affirmed the base’s safety, referencing comments from the defence secretary about established methods for defending military installations. The spokesperson declined to comment further on foreign military operations but highlighted presidential praise for UK police and security services regarding RAF Fairford.
The individuals arrested near the base, five British nationals and one dual UK-Iranian national, have all been released on bail.
