Donald Trump has indicated that the United States may consider banning diesel exports. This potential move comes as diesel prices have reached record highs in the UK, partly due to the ongoing conflict in Iran impacting refined fuel supplies.
The US Treasury Secretary has urged European nations to prepare to release their diesel reserves immediately. The argument presented is that American farmers, truckers, and businesses should not bear the brunt of soaring fuel costs, especially with upcoming midterm elections in November.
Experts caution that a US export ban could exacerbate diesel price pressures in other countries, unless alternative supplies become available. The United States is a significant global supplier of diesel, exporting a substantial volume daily. The UK, in particular, relies heavily on imported diesel, with a notable portion originating from the US.
In response to the situation, UK Energy Minister Martin McCluskey held discussions with European counterparts. A government spokesperson stated that the UK has a diverse and resilient supply, and continues to engage with international partners and the domestic fuel industry, stressing there is no cause for concern about shortages.
