The Pentagon has indicated that an upcoming execution by firing squad will be livestreamed, a move that would mark the first time such an event has been broadcast live in the United States.

Law professor Deborah Denno, who specializes in US execution methods, stated that while some states allow public viewing and require journalists or citizen volunteers as witnesses, a livestreamed execution has never occurred. She suggested that such a broadcast could introduce an unprecedented level of transparency, potentially showing the public the realities of capital punishment.

Denno also raised important considerations for a livestream, including age restrictions and compliance with the policies of online platforms. Many major social media sites, such as Meta, YouTube, TikTok, and X, have rules prohibiting or restricting the livestreaming of violent content and death, with Meta and TikTok having explicit bans on capital punishment broadcasts.
