Officials are tasked with ensuring immediate compliance with the order, which the government states is necessary to prevent threats to “public order” and “national unity.” Additional measures include the removal of all caste references from police records and public notices, and the imposition of fines under the Motor Vehicles Act for vehicles displaying caste-based stickers or slogans. The new directive has drawn criticism from opposition parties.
