Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay jointly inaugurated a new stretch of the Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase II project on Sunday, October 11, 2026. The newly opened section connects Poonamallee and Vadapalani.
The Prime Minister’s visit to Chennai also included the inauguration and foundation stone laying for various development projects valued at over ₹13,000 crore. These projects cover multiple sectors including Metro Rail, highways, railways, ports, petroleum, and scientific research.
In the highway sector, projects worth approximately ₹3,700 crore were initiated. The railway sector saw projects exceeding ₹750 crore, including the operationalization of the Karaikal-Peralam railway line and the construction of three rail overbridges in the Coimbatore region.
Additionally, the Prime Minister launched initiatives to enhance maritime infrastructure and cargo capacity at the Chennai Port, V.O. Chidambaranar Port, and Kamarajar Port. A project for lube oil base stocks at the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited’s Manali refinery was also initiated.
