Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced that he and all Congress MLAs will travel to Delhi to protest the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He alleges that one crore voters have been removed from the state’s electoral lists without proper verification.
Shivakumar stated that Congress MLAs have been instructed to be in Delhi to defend voters’ rights. The party plans to organize its own campaign rather than join protests organized by other groups, and does not intend to mobilize a large crowd. The Chief Minister emphasized that the party’s goal is to ensure the protection of every voter’s right to vote across the country.
The Chief Minister also raised concerns about democratic freedoms, citing restrictions, internet shutdowns, and detentions of individuals arriving by plane. He suggested that such actions, including the arrest of elected representatives, are embarrassing for the country and questioned whether India is experiencing democracy or an emergency.
Shivakumar specifically highlighted the alleged deletion of names of Dalits, minorities, and backward communities, stating that their electoral participation requires particular protection. He described the erasure of votes, especially for political purposes, as inhumane and indicative of a dictatorship rather than democracy.
