Mobile internet services were suspended for ten hours on October 10 in Delhi. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) ordered the shutdown within a 500-metre radius of eight locations, including stadiums and community centres. These sites were used as temporary detention centres by Delhi Police.
The MHA cited concerns over public safety, public order, and the prevention of incitement to offences as reasons for the suspension. The order was issued on October 9 and enforced from 12 noon to 10 p.m. on October 10.
Delhi Police had converted these venues into holding facilities to manage protesters who were detained from various locations. Approximately 2500 protesters were taken to these centres and later released the same day. The suspension was implemented under the provisions of the Telecommunications Act, 2023 and related rules.
