The Supreme Court of India has recorded an all-time high of 88,417 pending cases, according to data from the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG). This total comprises 69,553 civil cases and 18,864 criminal matters. The increase in case pendency occurs even as the court operates at its full sanctioned judicial strength of 34 judges. In August alone, 7,080 new cases were instituted, while 5,667 cases were disposed of, reflecting an 80.04% disposal rate for cases filed during that specific month. This rising backlog persists despite various efforts by the judicial leadership, including the convening of benches during the summer recess and measures by successive Chief Justices to minimize judicial vacancies. Furthermore, the government has consistently approved Collegium recommendations for Supreme Court appointments with expediency, often within 48 hours.
