CPI(M) Rajya Sabha member John Brittas has written to the President, Vice President, and Chief Justice of India, alleging he was manhandled, dragged, and assaulted inside a police vehicle.
Brittas is seeking urgent intervention and accountability from police personnel, as well as action regarding Parliamentary privilege. He stated that the incident represents an assault on democratic freedoms and the rule of law.
In an X post, Brittas highlighted that the alleged assault occurred shortly after the Supreme Court issued directives to protect peaceful protest and constitutional rights. He asserted that governments should not intimidate democracy into silence or use force to suppress dissent.
Brittas further commented that the strength of a democracy is demonstrated by its ability to address dissent, not by its capacity to suppress it. He believes people should not be expected to surrender their constitutional freedoms simply because dissent is inconvenient for those in power.
