Saint-Gobain India and IIT-Madras are joining forces to establish two new research laboratories focused on advancing sustainable construction materials and digital technologies for the built environment.
This collaboration, backed by a ₹3.8 crore grant over three years, will create the Digital Real-Time Sensing Technologies for Infrastructure (DRSTI) and Concrete Admixture Research for Engineering Next-gen Construction (CAREN) laboratories. These facilities will be located at IIT-Madras’s Centre of Excellence on Technologies for Low-carbon and Lean Construction.
The initiative aims to tackle key challenges within the construction sector, such as enhancing productivity, material efficiency, structural durability, and driving digital transformation. The CAREN lab will explore the interactions of chemical admixtures with alternative cementitious materials, including industrial by-products and supplementary materials that can substitute Portland cement. Meanwhile, the DRSTI lab will concentrate on developing intelligent solutions for monitoring construction progress, quality assessment, productivity improvements, and building performance evaluation, according to a press release.
