Weeks before the Ganga Water Treaty is set to expire in December, India’s Ministry of External Affairs stated that a structured mechanism is in place to address the treaty’s requirements.
Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that the Joint Rivers Commission serves as this mechanism for discussions on all cross-boundary rivers, including the Ganga. India expressed a desire for a positive relationship with Bangladesh.
The treaty, signed in 1996, requires expert and political consultations for renewal. While Bangladesh has indicated expectations of a short-term renewal, Indian officials have not yet commented on this possibility.
India has invited Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to visit New Delhi, but no update has been provided on the treaty’s renewal or the dates for the Prime Minister’s visit. The spokesperson also acknowledged awareness of protests by garment industry workers in Bangladesh.
