Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India’s operational metro network has expanded significantly, growing from 248 km before 2014 to 1,200 km currently. He stated that metro services, once available in only five cities, are now operational in 26 cities across the country, with over one crore people using the metro daily.

The Prime Minister inaugurated the 23-km Pune Metro Line 3 (Pink Line), which connects the Hinjewadi IT hub to the District Court Metro station. This new line, built at a cost of over ₹8,300 crore, is expected to improve daily commutes for IT professionals, reduce traffic congestion, and lessen reliance on private vehicles. The Pink Line will be operated by women and will utilize solar power for approximately 30% of its electricity needs.

Additionally, Mr. Modi laid the foundation stone for four new metro corridors under Phase-II of the Pune Metro, involving an investment of around ₹13,500 crore. He emphasized that the expansion of urban infrastructure, particularly metro networks, is crucial for accelerating economic growth and improving the ease of living and transportation for city dwellers.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the growth of Maharashtra’s metro network from 11 km in 2014 to nearly 200 km, with over 680 km currently under construction. He noted that this infrastructure development is attracting significant investments and generating employment opportunities.
