The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has identified six key junctions in the city for the priority strengthening of pedestrian facilities, based on findings from an Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad study. Feasibility assessments are underway for the construction of foot over-bridges or sky-walks at these locations, which include Afzalgunj, Lakdikapul (towards AC Guards), BHEL, JNTU, Madina, and Miyapur T Junction.

Notably, on October 22, the Hyderabad Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority issued a request for proposals, inviting consultancy services for a detailed project report concerning a pedestrian sky-walk at the JNTU-Hyderabad junction. JNTU is highlighted as a dynamic hub with significant pedestrian and vehicular interaction due to its educational institutions, commercial complexes, and transit facilities. This proposed sky-walk aims to provide seamless, grade-separated connectivity, enhance commuter safety, reduce pedestrian-vehicular conflicts, and promote an accessible urban environment. The JNTU junction is one of 20 locations initially identified by the IIT-Hyderabad study as requiring pedestrian infrastructure upgrades.

This initiative follows HMDA's prior efforts, which include the launch of a pilot sky-walk at Uppal in 2023 and the commencement of another at Mehdipatnam in 2020.
