The Azmi Family Residence: An Account of Openness and Cultural Exchange

Actress Shabana Azmi, a prominent figure in Indian cinema, comes from a distinguished artistic lineage. Her father, the esteemed Urdu poet Kaifi Azmi, and her mother, renowned theatre and film actor Shaukat Kaifi, fostered an upbringing influenced by their advocacy of communism, which shaped her character.

Her husband, screenwriter and poet Javed Akhtar, recently recounted an anecdote about Azmi’s childhood home in Mumbai. He described the cottage as having an unconventional open-door policy; the main gate could not be locked and doors typically remained open. This approach was attributed to Kaifi Azmi’s philosophy, encapsulated in his statement, “The gates to my home will never be shut.” This environment reportedly made the residence a constant gathering place for visitors and frequent cultural interactions.
