A union leader has stated that the Prime Minister is significantly underpaid, especially in comparison to some public servants earning over $1 million annually. Jeff Lapidos, who leads an Australian Services Union branch representing Tax Office staff, believes that public officials should be compensated based on the value of their work rather than a uniform salary scale.
Lapidos highlighted that the real value of salaries for ATO employees has decreased by 9.55% over the past 13 years due to inflation, which he described as exploitation by past and present governments. He is advocating for fair pay for all ATO staff and believes the Prime Minister also deserves equitable compensation, suggesting the Prime Minister’s current salary is too low.
The Prime Minister’s salary is determined by an independent remuneration tribunal. Lapidos’s comments come in the context of reports that 11 public servants are earning more than $1 million, with one receiving over $1.5 million, while the Prime Minister’s base wage is $622,000.
