Senior CPI(M) leader A.K. Balan has formally refused demands from Jamaat-e-Islami for an apology and ₹1 crore in compensation. This refusal follows a legal notice issued by Jamaat-e-Islami regarding remarks Balan allegedly made, claiming that if the United Democratic Front (UDF) formed the government in Kerala, the Home department would be controlled by Jamaat-e-Islami and that the Marad riot could recur. Balan stated his unwillingness to apologize or pay, expressing readiness to face imprisonment if necessary and asserting his familiarity with legal processes. He further accused Jamaat-e-Islami of attempting to label him with an anti-minority mindset.
