Author Chetan Bhagat recently discussed the financial terms related to the 2009 film 3 Idiots, an adaptation of his 2004 debut novel, Five Point Someone. In a podcast interview, Bhagat confirmed receiving a total of Rs 11 lakh for the film rights, comprising an initial Rs 1 lakh contract and a subsequent Rs 10 lakh bonus awarded following the movie’s success. The film, which had a budget of Rs 55 crore, subsequently generated Rs 350 crore in worldwide earnings.
Bhagat indicated that the adaptation served as a significant career milestone, providing him with the assurance to pursue writing full-time, a path he had embarked upon after leaving his banking profession and publishing three novels. His later works, such as 2 States and Half Girlfriend, also saw cinematic adaptations.
