Canadian Foreign Minister Begins India Visit for Bilateral Cooperation

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand is scheduled to commence a visit to New Delhi on Sunday, marking the first stop in a three-nation diplomatic tour that also includes Singapore and China.

During her time in India, Minister Anand is slated to hold discussions with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. The primary objective of these engagements is to establish a framework for strategic cooperation across various sectors, including trade diversification, energy transformation, and security.

In addition to her engagements in New Delhi, Minister Anand will travel to Mumbai, where she intends to meet with Canadian and Indian firms. These meetings aim to explore opportunities for supporting investment, job creation, and economic growth in both nations.

This visit follows approximately three weeks after Canada’s National Security Advisor Nathalie Drouin visited India for extensive talks with her Indian counterpart, Ajit Doval. The diplomatic exchanges take place amidst a backdrop of recent bilateral tensions, including India’s dismissal of a Canadian accusation as “absurd” and its subsequent expulsion of an equal number of Canadian diplomats.
