Clark Olofsson, a figure involved in a significant 1973 Stockholm bank holdup that led to the coining of the term ‘Stockholm Syndrome,’ has died at the age of 78. The incident began when Jan-Erik Olsson, an ex-convict, took three female bank employees hostage, later joined by a man found in the vault, at a Stockholm bank.

Olsson’s demands included the release of Olofsson from prison and his presence at the bank, which Sweden’s minister of justice granted. Over the six-day standoff, a unique dynamic emerged: the hostages began to defend their captors and exhibited hostility toward police attempting to rescue them. During the crisis, one hostage, Kristin Enmark, reportedly requested to depart with her abductors in a getaway car during a telephone conversation with then-Prime Minister Olof Palme.
