Sotheby’s has announced it will offer 17 iPad drawing prints from David Hockney’s series, The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, for sale in London. Scheduled for auction on October 17 during Frieze week, this collection represents the largest group of Hockney’s iPad works ever to come to market. Yessica Marks, Sotheby’s Head of Prints, highlighted the rarity of such a sale, noting that only 24 Hockney iPad drawings had been sold worldwide by the auction house in nearly a decade, with half of those from this specific series. The sale of 17 prints in a single auction is therefore considered unprecedented. One featured piece, Lot 117 from the series, carries an estimate of £80,000-£120,000. Hockney, an early adopter of Apple’s iPad following its 2010 release, recognized its potential for subtle, layered artistic expression, reportedly stating that artist J.M.W. Turner “would have loved” the approach. The 88-year-old artist continues to utilize the iPad, with drawings from his time in Normandy slated for a future exhibition at London’s Serpentine gallery.
