A group of eight U.S. lawmakers has formally communicated with Indian Ambassador Vinay Mohan Kwatra, requesting that India grant bail and ensure a fair trial for Umar Khalid. Khalid is an accused in a conspiracy case linked to the 2020 North East Delhi riots.
The communication, referencing international law, underscores concerns regarding Khalid's legal process. Representative Jim McGovern, a signatory to the letter, posted on social media in December 2025 about a meeting with Khalid’s parents, stating that Khalid had been "jailed in India for over 5 years without trial."
However, Delhi's Karkardooma court recently granted Khalid interim bail from December 16 to December 29 to attend his sister's wedding. The letter also followed a meeting between Khalid’s parents and U.S. legislator Zohran Mamdani during their visit to the U.S. in December 2025.
