Examining the Oeuvre and Challenges of Filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak

Indian filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak, known for his eight feature films and ten documentaries, encountered significant obstacles throughout his career, including difficulties in securing financing, equipment, and production support. Many of his cinematic works, such as his debut feature Nagarik (1952), were released posthumously. Ghatak considered cinema an extension of his personal expression, and his "refugee trilogy"—Meghe Dhaka Tara (1960), Komal Gandhar (1961), and Subarnarekha (1962)—is recognized for its exploration of human struggle. Although initially not pursuing filmmaking as a career, his contributions, including acclaimed cinematography, left a notable mark, despite the documented challenges posed by alcoholism influencing his legacy.
