The family of A.R. Anish, a 38-year-old assistant prison officer at Central Prison, Poojappura, has authorized the donation of nine of his organs following his death on Wednesday. Mr. Anish was declared brain dead at Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Kottayam, after sustaining a head injury on October 17 while returning from Sabarimala.
The donated organs include his heart, lungs, two kidneys, pancreas, liver, one hand, and two retinas. These organs are designated for transplantation at three facilities: one kidney, the heart, lungs, and retinas will go to Kottayam MCH; one kidney, the pancreas, and a hand to Amrita Hospital in Kochi; and the liver to Caritas Hospital in Kottayam. The planned single-day transplantation of a kidney, heart, and lungs at Kottayam MCH has been reported as a potential first for a government hospital in India.
Mr. Anish is survived by his mother, Ambika Kumari, and his sisters. Minister for Health Veena George extended appreciation to Mr. Anish's family for their decision to donate his organs.
