Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that no U.S. official would attend the G20 Summit scheduled to be held in South Africa. In a post on Truth Social, Trump cited alleged "human rights abuses" against white farmers as the reason, describing the hosting of the summit in South Africa as a "total disgrace." He further stated his preference for the 2026 G20 Summit to be held in Miami, Florida.
Trump has consistently voiced concerns about violence targeting Afrikaners in South Africa, accusing the government of allowing the persecution of minority white farmers. However, the South African government has vehemently denied these claims of mistreatment. Officials expressed surprise at the accusations, noting that white people in the country generally maintain a much higher standard of living than its Black residents, more than three decades after the end of the apartheid system. Afrikaners are defined as descendants of primarily Dutch, German, and French settlers who arrived in South Africa in the mid-17th century.
