Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has provided an assessment of Shubman Gill’s captaincy and batting performance following the team’s recent five-Test series in England, which concluded in a 2-2 draw with a victory at The Oval.
Gambhir indicated that he communicated to the 25-year-old Gill that he had successfully navigated a challenging period in the team’s transition, suggesting that subsequent leadership responsibilities would be less arduous. He acknowledged Gill’s captaincy, spanning six Test matches, as still being in its early stages of development and affirmed his commitment to providing support. Gambhir also noted that Gill has yet to encounter the most difficult phases of his captaincy.
Regarding Gill’s batting, Gambhir expressed that he was not surprised by the player’s significant contribution, citing his potential. Gill amassed 754 runs across 10 innings, securing four centuries, including two hundreds in the second Test at Edgbaston. Gambhir also observed no indications of pressure from Gill during the series.
