International Visitor and Student Data for the United States

Recent data indicates shifts in international visitor and student trends for the United States. Following initial discussions in 2017 regarding potential impacts on tourism during the early months of the Trump administration, corrected figures showed a modest increase in international arrivals that year, after a prior decline. For the current year, international visitor numbers excluding those from Canada have risen. However, this increase has been offset by a decline in Canadian visitors, leading to an overall reduction in international arrivals.

The majority of overseas visitors in 2024, approximately 84%, utilized tourist visas. Business visas accounted for 12%, and student visas for 4%, though tourist visa holders from Latin America and the Caribbean often visit family. Furthermore, data from August indicates a significant decrease in student visa arrivals, falling 19% compared to the previous August and showing a 12% year-to-date decrease. This reduction in foreign student numbers is primarily driven by fewer arrivals from Asian countries.
