Karnataka Expands Automated System for Vehicle Fitness Certifications

The Karnataka Transport Department is significantly expanding its network of Automated Testing Stations (ATS) across the state. This initiative aims to modernize vehicle inspection processes and enhance transparency by replacing existing manual checks at Regional Transport Offices with a fully automated, technology-driven system. Upon the full operationalization of these new facilities, all vehicles requiring renewal of their fitness certificates will be mandated to undergo testing exclusively at ATS centers.

Each ATS will operate in strict accordance with the standards stipulated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, ensuring that issued fitness certificates are valid across India. The automated process is designed to store comprehensive data and visual records of every test, with individual results remaining confidential until a final assessment is generated, thereby preventing manipulation. To uphold quality and accuracy, each station will also undergo independent third-party audits every six months. Karnataka’s initial step in this digitalization effort was the inauguration of its first ATS in Nelamangala in 2024.
