The Maharashtra government has introduced an amendment bill in the Legislative Assembly aimed at restoring the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) powers to levy and collect property tax retrospectively. This legislative measure follows adverse court rulings that had impacted the corporation's revenue collection. The proposed bill seeks to amend the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, providing legal clarity and backing for the provisions governing the capital value assessment of properties. The BMC has been applying a capital value system for property tax since April 1, 2010, with Capital Value Rules, initially formulated in 2010 and revised in 2015, having been implemented retrospectively from that date.
