Essex Police have launched a manhunt following the erroneous release of Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu from HMP Chelmsford. Mr. Kebatu, an Ethiopian national, had been sentenced to 12 months for the sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl and a woman in Epping, Essex, in July. He reportedly arrived in the UK on a small boat and was residing at the Bell Hotel in Epping prior to his conviction. Prison sources indicated that he was intended for transfer to an immigration detention centre ahead of planned deportation.

The Prison Service has commenced an investigation into the incident, resulting in one officer being removed from discharging duties. A spokesperson for the Prison Service stated that they are working urgently with police to return Mr. Kebatu to custody, emphasizing public protection. Justice Secretary David Lammy expressed that he was "appalled" by the release and has ordered an urgent investigation, reiterating the intention for Mr. Kebatu's deportation.
