The Louvre Museum in Paris initiated an immediate shutdown and police investigation on Sunday morning following reports of a significant theft. A collection of jewels, historically linked to Napoleon and Empress Joséphine, was reportedly stolen during the museum’s opening hours.

Thieves were described in initial reports as being armed with chainsaws. Officials have characterized the incident as an “exceptional” security breach. French Culture Minister Rachida Dati confirmed the robbery on social media platform X and indicated her presence at the scene as investigations commenced. The Louvre also announced its closure via social media, citing “exceptional reasons” for the temporary measure.
