Former U.S. President Trump recently stated that “for the most part, there is consensus” regarding the next stages of a proposed Gaza ceasefire plan. However, questions persist concerning the future governance of Gaza following a gradual Israeli troop withdrawal and the potential disarmament of Hamas, which the plan calls for.
Israel’s military confirmed the ceasefire took effect on Friday, with 48 hostages expected to be released on Monday. In exchange, Israel is anticipated to free approximately 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu outlined that subsequent phases would involve Hamas disarming and Gaza undergoing demilitarization. The proposed plan also stipulates that Israel would maintain an open-ended military presence within Gaza, specifically along its border.
Observations during the ceasefire period included aid trucks delivering supplies to Palestinians in areas like Khan Younis, and residents returning to northern Gaza’s Sheikh Radwan.
