Peruvian President Dina Boluarte was removed from office by the nation’s Congress early Friday morning, following an impeachment vote of 122-0. The legislative body invoked a constitutional clause citing “permanent moral incapacity” to declare the presidency vacant.
This action followed a period of reported mounting public frustration regarding perceived failures to address crime, specifically in the wake of a recent shooting incident, and a subsequent withdrawal of support from political parties that had previously sustained her government.
In a prerecorded statement released after the vote, Ms. Boluarte stated, “At all times I called for unity, to work together, to fight for our country.”
The President of Congress, José Jerí, is expected to serve as interim president until a general election, currently scheduled for April 12, unless lawmakers elect another leader from among themselves.
