Punjab Health Department Directs FIRs Amid De-addiction Center Inspections

The Punjab Directorate of Health and Family Welfare has recently directed Civil Surgeons across the state to register First Information Reports (FIRs) concerning reported 'theft' incidents. These incidents were identified during inspections of 22 de-addiction centers associated with Dr. Amit Bansal. The directive follows advice from the department's law officer and occurs ten months after the Punjab Vigilance Bureau initially accused the clinics of selling banned drugs to addicts.

The health department's inspections of these centers, which commenced eight months after the initial serious allegations, involved informing owners via email, conducting physical verification of medicine stocks against online entries, and reviewing staff documentation such as attendance, salary, and counselling registers. Biometric attendance data was also matched with dispensing records where available.
