Telangana Human Rights Commission Probes Family's Police Harassment Complaint

The Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC) has initiated an intervention following a complaint from the family of Shaik Riyaz, who was killed in a recent police encounter. Riyaz’s mother, wife, and minor children formally presented a complaint to the Commission, alleging harassment, physical torture, and prevention from accessing their home by police officials. The family further claimed that constable E. Pramod Kumar had allegedly demanded ₹3 lakh from Riyaz, with ₹30,000 reportedly paid, and cited "fraudulent monetary dealings" between them.

The TGHRC had earlier taken suo motu cognisance of the encounter based on media reports, instructing the Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) to submit a factual report by November 24. Following the new complaint, the Commission advanced the hearing to October 27 and directed the DGP to provide a detailed factual report by November 3. The TGHRC also issued an order stipulating that no coercive action or harassment be carried out against any member of Riyaz’s family until further directives are issued.
