The Mandalorian and Grogu has recorded the lowest opening weekend box office for a Star Wars film released under Disney's ownership, which began in 2012. Despite achieving the top box office position upon its launch, the film's initial financial performance was below that of previous Disney-era theatrical releases, including 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story, which had a budget of $275 million and grossed $392.9 million globally.
With a reported production budget of $165 million, The Mandalorian and Grogu marks the first Star Wars film in cinemas since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Following 2019, Disney paused new theatrical Star Wars film releases to prioritize the development of acclaimed streaming series for Disney+, such as The Mandalorian and Andor. The next theatrical installment, Star Wars: Starfighter, which is set to star Ryan Gosling, is scheduled for release in May 2027.
