A light aircraft crashed at Shellharbour Airport, near Wollongong in New South Wales, on Saturday morning, resulting in the deaths of three individuals. The private plane was reportedly scheduled to fly to Ballarat. Chief Inspector Aaron Wunderlich of Lake Illawarra Police District confirmed the incident, noting that a group of approximately 10 to 15 members of the public and personnel from the Rural Fire Service (RFS), who were conducting a training exercise at the airport, witnessed the event. Inspector Andrew Barber of Fire and Rescue NSW confirmed the local RFS unit immediately responded to the scene. NSW Police announced that counselling services would be made available to both witnesses and first responders impacted by the crash.
