United States and China Announce New Trade and Resource Controls

Trade tensions between the United States and China intensified this week following new economic measures announced by both nations. The United States declared its intention to implement new 100 percent tariffs on Chinese imports, effective November 1. This announcement came after China had previously unveiled new controls on rare earth metals and related products.

President Trump stated he felt ‘blindsided’ by China’s rare earth measures, despite having recently characterized the bilateral relationship as ‘very good.’ Conversely, Chinese commentators asserted that Beijing’s actions were a direct response to what they described as renewed technological restrictions from the United States, labeling Washington the ‘provocateur.’ Observers noted that both nations appeared to believe they held a strategic advantage in the ongoing dispute, with each suggesting the other had overextended its position.

Following Mr. Trump’s tariff announcement, Chinese analysts and commentators voiced criticism. The Chinese government did not issue an immediate official response.
