University of Virginia Establishes Anti-Discrimination Compliance Agreement

The University of Virginia (UVA) has entered into an agreement to adhere to federal anti-discrimination criteria concerning admissions and hiring practices. This accord follows a period of federal scrutiny, during which Department of Justice officials had alleged that the university's president failed to discontinue certain diversity, equity, and inclusion practices. These practices, federal officials contended, constituted unlawful discrimination under criteria established by the Trump administration.

Under the terms of the agreement, UVA commits to providing quarterly data demonstrating compliance, with personal certification from its president. In return, the Department of Justice stated it would conclude its related investigations upon satisfactory adherence. University officials indicated the agreement safeguards academic freedom and eligibility for federal research funding, while limiting external federal monitoring to quarterly communications.

This resolution aligns with similar agreements reached by Columbia and Brown universities. It is important to note, however, that the agreement does not resolve all ongoing federal investigations into the University of Virginia.
