Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee cited her for her “tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”

Machado, a conservative former member of the national assembly, has been a central figure in opposing Venezuela’s socialist government under President Nicolás Maduro. She has been living in hiding since last year, following a crackdown on the opposition subsequent to an election that independent analysts widely viewed as fraudulent.

While Ms. Machado has largely avoided commenting on whether U.S. military intervention should be involved in Mr. Maduro’s removal, she has expressed support for a U.S. military buildup in the Caribbean. This buildup has included operations where American forces have destroyed suspected drug boats in international waters, resulting in the deaths of at least 21 individuals.
