Agreement Reached on Israel-Hamas Hostage and Prisoner Exchange

President Trump announced on Wednesday an agreement between Israel and Hamas regarding an exchange of the remaining Israeli hostages held in Gaza for Palestinian prisoners. This deal is presented as the first phase of a 20-point peace plan introduced by the Trump administration in late September. The agreement followed indirect negotiations facilitated by Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the United States.

Hamas stated that the deal would result in the cessation of the war, Israel’s withdrawal from the territory, and an increase in humanitarian aid for Gaza. However, Israel has denied this characterization of the agreement. The proposed plan outlines that approximately 20 Israeli hostages would be exchanged for 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences in Israel and 1,700 Gazans detained during the conflict. This exchange is expected to occur approximately three days after Israel formally ratifies a cease-fire. It remains unclear whether Hamas will disarm as part of the agreement.
