Bihar's 2020 Assembly Elections: A Review of Close Electoral Contests

The 2020 Bihar Assembly elections featured exceptionally close contests in numerous constituencies, with several seats decided by very narrow vote margins. Various political parties, including the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI), CPI(M), CPI(ML) Liberation, and the then-undivided Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), secured victories or finished as runners-up with vote differences ranging from just 133 to under 2,000 votes.

Specific examples include the JD(U)’s win in Barbigha by 133 votes, the LJP’s lone victory in Maithini by 333 votes, and the RJD’s defeat of a BSP candidate in Ramgarh by 189 votes. Other tight races mentioned are the JD(U)’s victory in Bhorey by 462 votes, the BJP’s loss in Dehri by 464 votes, and the BJP’s win in Bachhwara by 484 votes against the CPI.

The article also highlights contrasting outcomes in some of these segments during subsequent Lok Sabha polls. For instance, in the Parbatta segment, where JD(U) won by 951 votes in 2020, the BJP later led the RJD by 24,075 votes. Similarly, the Congress secured the Maharajganj segment by 1,976 votes in 2020 but trailed the BJP by 20,738 votes in the same segment during a Lok Sabha poll “last year.”
