British Indian Political Preferences: Recent Shifts Across UK Parties

Polling conducted by the 1928 Institute, a group of Oxford academics, indicates a notable shift in political support among British Indian voters. The data reveals that backing for Reform UK has increased from 4% to 13% in the past year, although its overall support within this community remains lower than among the general UK population.

Current figures show Labour holding 35% of the British Indian vote, with the Conservatives at 18%, and both Reform UK and the Green Party now at 13%. The Greens' support has notably risen from 8% at the previous election, particularly among younger voters.

Researchers suggest that factors such as social conservatism among Indian voters and growing nationalism among Hindu voters may be contributing to a shift further right on the political spectrum. Additionally, a 2021 report from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace cited Labour's past stance on Kashmiri independence under Jeremy Corbyn's leadership as a factor deterring some British Indian voters.

Regarding voter priorities, education consistently ranks as the primary concern for British Indians. However, the second most important issue has transitioned from health five years ago to the economy in the present.
