The annual migration of tens of millions of red crabs has begun on Christmas Island, an Australian territory situated near the Indonesian island of Java. This yearly occurrence sees an estimated 50 million crabs traversing the island from their inland habitats to the beaches to deposit their eggs, covering roads and undergrowth in a prominent red hue.
To assist their journey across challenging terrain, including roadways, dedicated crab bridges have been installed. Local radio broadcasts also provide updates on the crabs' movements. According to Parks Australia, the migration is projected to culminate in a primary spawning event around mid-November, with a secondary spawning anticipated approximately one month thereafter. The return of baby crabs to the shore is expected in the new year.
