On March 7, 2026, the Mahila Court in Coimbatore sentenced three individuals to life imprisonment in connection with a 2025 gang rape case. Karuppasamy alias Satheesh (30) and T. Guna alias Thavasi (20) were among those convicted. The court found the trio guilty of gang rape under Section 70(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which provides for rigorous imprisonment of not less than 20 years and can extend to imprisonment for life, along with other applicable sections of the BNS. The incident involved the gang rape of a 20-year-old college student in a deserted area near the Coimbatore International Airport during the intervening night of November 2 and 3, 2025.

Presiding Judge Sundararaj also directed the State government to provide a compensation of ₹7 lakh to the survivor and ₹2 lakh to her boyfriend, who served as the complainant. Counsel representing the convicted individuals under the Legal Aid Defence Counsel scheme have stated their intention to appeal the trial court’s verdict to the Madras High Court.
