England defeated Sri Lanka by 89 runs in a Women’s World Cup fixture held in Colombo, a result that places England at the top of the eight-team table.
Batting first, England posted a total of 253-9. Nat Sciver-Brunt contributed significantly with 117 runs from 117 balls, having been dropped early in her innings. Additional scores included Tammy Beaumont’s 32 and Heather Knight’s 29. A 38-run seventh-wicket partnership between Sciver-Brunt and Dean helped stabilize England’s innings after several middle-order dismissals, including Emma Lamb and Alice Capsey to Inoka Ranaweera.
In response, Sri Lanka reached 98-2 before their innings concluded at 164 all out. Sri Lanka’s captain, Chamari Athapaththu, retired hurt early in the innings, while openers Hasini Perera and Harshitha Samarawickrama formed an initial partnership. England’s bowling effort was spearheaded by Sophie Ecclestone, who took 4 wickets for 17 runs. This victory marks England’s third consecutive win in the tournament, moving them one point ahead of defending champions Australia.
England is scheduled to compete against Pakistan in their next match, also in Colombo, on Wednesday.
