Authorities in Meghalaya successfully defused an improvised explosive device (IED) discovered at Umsning market in the Ri-Bhoi district.
According to Superintendent of Police Vivekanand Singh, an abandoned bag containing suspected explosives was detected on Saturday evening, October 12, 2025, in a compound located in front of the Meghalaya Rural Bank. A bomb detection and disposal squad (BDDS) and K-9 team were dispatched, confirming the presence of explosives and subsequently rendering the IED safe. Analysis revealed the device contained 4.7 kg of gelatine, 10 detonators, and approximately 50 iron rod pieces intended as splinters.
The operation concluded with no reported loss of life or property. All materials were seized from the scene in accordance with standard operating procedures. A case has been registered, and investigations are currently underway. Police have identified one suspect, and efforts to apprehend this individual are ongoing.
