An explosion late Thursday evening destroyed two cars belonging to the family of Italian investigative journalist Sigfrido Ranucci, outside his home near Pomezia, south of Rome. Mr. Ranucci subsequently reposted information on social media indicating that an explosive device placed under his vehicle was the cause of the blast, which occurred around 10 p.m. local time.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the incident, stating it was aimed at intimidating Mr. Ranucci. The journalist, known for hosting the investigative program “Report” on Rai 3, has been under police protection since 2009, with increased security measures initiated in 2021 due to a reported assassination plot involving the ‘Ndrangheta organized crime group.

The incident highlights the risks faced by journalists in Italy, where organizations like Reporters Without Borders report that approximately 20 journalists investigating corruption and organized crime receive 24-hour police protection, and an additional 250 are provided with police escorts for their work outside offices.
