The Prime Minister recently connected his "Viksit Bharat" (developed India) initiative to a proposed "resurgence in the East," following the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) first electoral victory to form a government in West Bengal, replacing the Trinamool Congress which had governed since 2011. He cited the historical regions of Ang (Bihar), Banga (West Bengal), and Kalinga (Odisha) as vital "pillars of greatness" for India. For the achievement of "Viksit Bharat," the Prime Minister stated a need to revive these three regions, describing Kalinga as a "maritime superpower," Ang as a "powerhouse" of the cotton and silk trade, and Banga as a cultural "epicentre." These remarks follow the BJP forming its inaugural government in Odisha in June 2024 and securing a majority in Bihar as part of the NDA coalition in November of the previous year. The Prime Minister had first invoked these historical regions during an April 27 poll rally in West Bengal.
